Karl Alderson and Janet Wilkinson began building up their Highland cattle herd and beef trading business in Coverdale in 2003, alongside their 'day jobs', Karl as a gamekeeper and Janet working in an estate agency. They began with just four bullocks bought from another Yorkshire breeder, and now have a herd of around 50 cattle including 15 breeding cows and two bulls.
The couple originally kept sheep when they took over the farm from Karlís mother, but decided to produce their own beef and sell it direct. Highland cattle were the perfect solution, not requiring large farm buildings and living outside all year round.

Most of the beef is sold through Campbellís in Leyburn, a family-run supermarket who wanted to market locally produced beef. It also sells well amongst the UKís shooting community who visit the moors in the area.
Karl and Janet show their Highlanders, appearing regularly at Otley, Nidderdale, Kilnsey and the Great Yorkshire shows and winning their first championship back in 2007. They also have a growing business selling on young heifers as showing and breeding stock.
